Private label and third-party cosmetic manufacturing
Neuriva Life Sciences takes a personal care or cosmetic product from an idea to a licensed, manufactured, market-ready SKU. We do the research, formulation and regulatory work ourselves, and we place production with one of three manufacturing partners. We are based in Mumbai and work with brands across India.
What we actually are
It is worth being precise about this, because the private label market in India is not always.
Neuriva is a research and development company. We are not a factory, and we do not describe ourselves as one. What we do is the work that happens before and around manufacturing: understanding whether a category is worth entering, designing a formulation that does what the label will say it does, getting it through licensing, and then managing the production run at a plant that is equipped for it.
Three manufacturers make the product: TJS Beauty Secrets, Reve Pharma and Sprivil Healthcare. Which one depends on the dosage form, the batch size and the licence category. We stay on the project through the run rather than handing you over at the factory gate.
The reason to work this way is that most private label failures are not manufacturing failures. They are a formulation that cannot carry its claim, a licence application that stalls, a stability result that arrives after the launch date, or a category that was already saturated when the brief was written. Those are all problems that get solved before a kettle is switched on, or not at all.
Who this is for
- Brands launching a first personal care or cosmetic range who have a market position but no formulation or regulatory capability
- Established brands extending into a new category, where the existing supplier cannot formulate for it
- Clinics, dermatologists and practitioners who want a product under their own name with a formulation they can defend to a patient
- Distributors and retailers building a private label line against a specific price point and margin
- Overseas brands entering India who need the regulatory pathway handled locally
What we do, in the order it happens
1. Market and category research
Before a formulation brief exists, the question is whether the product should. We look at the category you are proposing to enter: who is already in it, at what price points, on what claims, and where the gap actually is. This is the stage where a product gets redefined or dropped, and it is much cheaper to drop one here.
2. Product curation
Translating a commercial position into a specific product list: dosage forms, pack sizes, price architecture, and the sequence to launch them in. A range of four products launched in the right order behaves very differently from the same four launched together.
3. Product formulation
This is the part of our work that is closest to our own research. Neuriva develops formulations from a stated mechanism rather than from a competitor’s ingredient list, which means the formulation is built to produce a specific effect and the claim follows from it. We develop the formulation, define the specification, and run the bench work and iterations until it performs and holds.
4. Claim validation
If the label is going to make a claim, the claim should survive being questioned. We define the test protocol and route the testing to Mascot, an independent claim-testing laboratory. Independence matters here: a claim validated by the people who formulated the product is not validation.
5. Licensing and regulatory documentation
Cosmetic manufacturing in India is licensed by the State Licensing Authority — the state FDA — under the Cosmetics Rules, 2020. We prepare and assemble the application and supporting documentation, and manage the process through to grant. Where a product is to be made under loan licence at a partner plant, we handle that route instead.
6. Stability trials
We coordinate stability studies on the finished formulation in its final pack, because a product is only stable in the container it actually ships in. Stability data is a licensing requirement and a shelf-life claim, and it is the single most common cause of a launch date moving.
7. Label and package design
Primary and secondary pack design, and the label itself — which in this category is a regulatory document as much as a piece of branding. Mandatory declarations, ingredient listing and claim wording all have to be right before a plate is cut.
8. Procurement
Raw materials, actives, packaging components and closures, specified and sourced against the formulation. Substituting an active or a pack component after a stability trial means repeating the trial, so procurement decisions are made at specification stage, not at purchase stage.
9. Production
The batch runs at the partner plant matched to the product. We manage the transfer of the formulation to the plant, the first batch, in-process checks against specification, and release.
Our manufacturing partners
We place production with three manufacturers rather than one, because dosage forms and licence categories are not interchangeable and a single plant cannot cover them all well.
- TJS Beauty Secrets — cosmetics manufacturing
- Reve Pharma
- Sprivil Healthcare
Declaration of interest: Neuriva’s founder, Shareeq Khan, and Shreepal Jain, Neuriva’s Executive Vice President for Manufacturing, are both directors of TJS Beauty Secrets. We state this rather than leave it to be discovered. Where TJS is the right plant for a product we will say so and declare the relationship; where it is not, the work goes to Reve Pharma or Sprivil Healthcare.
